Brian Francis

2013 Festival

Brian Francis is the author of two critically acclaimed novels. His most
recent, Natural Order, was selected by the Toronto Star, Kobo and Georgia
Straight as a Best Book of 2011. The book was shortlisted for a 2012
Ontario Library Association Evergreen Award. His first novel, Fruit, was a
2009 Canada Reads finalist and was selected as a Barnes and Noble Discover
Great New Writers title. He lives in Toronto.

Writers invited to submit stories for 2014 Alice Munro Writers & Readers Festival

 

Writers of short fiction are encouraged to enter the Alice Munro Writers and Readers Festival’s 2014 Short Story Competition. This annual short story competition is designed to provide an opportunity for writers to develop their craft and provide a forum for sharing their work.  The Festival’s committee members are dedicated to supporting the efforts and talent of unpublished and emerging writers of short fiction, creating this competition to celebrate this special writing skill.

 

All contestants must have Canadian connections to be eligible for the 2014 Alice Munro Writers & Readers Short Story Competition. Entries must be written in English, typed using standard fonts such as Times Roman, Helvetica or Arial, size 11 or 12, double spaced on plain white paper.  All pages must be numbered clearly.  Entries must not exceed 5000 words.  Copyright remains property of the author. 

 

Monetary prizes will be awarded for top five winners in both adult and teen (age 13-19 as of August 1) categories.  Winners will be invited to read from their entries at a Gala Event September 27, 2014 during the 2014 Festival September 26-28.

 

Contest entries must be postmarked on or before August 1, 2014.  Entries must be submitted in hard-copy to Box 90, Wingham, Ontario with a digital copy forwarded to .  Adult entries must be accompanied by a $25 entry fee per story and Teen category submissions must be accompanied by $10 entry fee, payable by cheque or online by Paypal.  No more than three entries will be accepted from any one writer in the 2014 competition.   Complete contest rules and entry forms are available at AliceMunroFestival.ca.  For more information, email or call 519-523-4328.

The world watched this week as Alice Munro’s daughter, Jenny accepted the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature on her behalf. Here at home, the community gathered at the Wingham Golf & Curling Club to send greetings to Ms. Munro and to toast her achievement with a champagne and cake reception. Approximately 80 people attended the event. Greetings were delivered by Mayor Paul Gowing of Morris-Turnberry, Mayor Jim Ginn of Central Huron and Reeve Neil Vincent of North Huron, Meighan Wark of Huron County Cultural Services and Ms. Munro’s cousin, Beth Powell O’Bright. The greetings were taped and will be sent to Ms. Munro. Attendees also had opportunity to sign a guest book and the congratulatory remarks will accompany the video of the greetings. The event was sponsored by the Alice Munro Writers and Readers Festival, the Wingham Business Improvement Area and the Township of North Huron.
